I'm watching "Mad About English", a documentary on the Discovery Channel about how the Chinese people rushed to learn English before the Beijing Olympics.
There's this guy being featured because he's one of the main people tasked with teaching millions of people how to speak English. His method? Stand up and shout English phrases for 40 minutes a day. He said the only way to learn English is to memorize and recite. He had hundreds of people, young and old, in a camp where they had to wake up early, go for a morning run, then spend the day shouting English phrases...so very far from our communicative method of teaching in the office.
So anyway, this guy gave a seminar on learning English and he started telling everyone that he speaks English because he pities the foreigners for not speaking Mandarin. I feel insulted. Here's a guy who went out of his way to learn English, is telling all these people at his camp that English is a tool that will get you places, and yet he speaks it because he pities people who don't speak Chinese?
You tell me, but it seems to me that there is something wrong with that logic.
